2011

The 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee took place on June 2nd, 2011. It was held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, and 275 spellers participated.

This was the first year that the Bee was held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, its location all the way through 2025, the Bee’s centennial year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the hotel, the Bee was held in Orlando in 2021, but returned to the Gaylord National in 2022.

Sukanya Roy

South Abington Township, Pennsylvania

Sukanya Roy, age 14, sponsored by the Times Leader, won the $30,000 prize by correctly spelling the word “cymotrichous.”

Sukanya is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. She also graduated from Brown University with undergraduate degrees in international relations and English.
