The 57th Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee took place on May 31st, 1984. It was held at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C., and 151 spellers participated.

Daniel Greenblatt was the first speller to win who was sponsored by a weekly newspaper, the Loudoun Times-Mirror.
